How To Start Your Own Kombucha SCOBY without a mother

Amazon kombucha starterkit

To start your own kombucha SCOBY without a mother, you'll need a few ingredients:

1. Unflavored, raw, and unpasteurized store-bought kombucha: Look for a brand that contains live cultures. Avoid any with added flavorings or preservatives.

2. Sweetened tea: Brew a batch of black or green tea, then add sugar to feed the SCOBY during fermentation. Let it cool to room temperature.

Steps:

1. Prepare the sweetened tea and let it cool to room temperature. (I use a consol bottle)

2. Pour the store-bought kombucha into a clean glass container. Use about 10% of the volume of your container.

3. Add the sweetened tea to the container, filling it to about 90% capacity.

4. Cover the container with a breathable cloth, like a coffee filter or tightly woven cloth, and secure it with a rubber band to keep out debris and insects while allowing airflow.

5. Place the container in a warm, dark place where it won't be disturbed.

6. Wait for about 1-3 weeks for the SCOBY to form. During this time, the liquid will ferment and a new SCOBY will develop on the surface.

Remember that the process may take longer without a starter SCOBY, and there is a chance it may not develop properly. Be patient and keep an eye on the progress. Once your new SCOBY has formed, you can use it to brew your own kombucha.

HOMEMADE CLOVE OIL for insect bites

Making homemade clove oil for insect bites is a straightforward process. Clove oil is known for its natural analgesic and antiseptic properties, which can help alleviate pain and reduce the risk of infection from insect bites. Here's a simple recipe to make your own clove oil at home:

Ingredients:
- Whole cloves (dried or fresh)
- Carrier oil (e.g., olive oil, coconut oil, almond oil)
Instructions:

1. Crush the cloves:

Take a handful of whole cloves and use a mortar and pestle or a grinder to crush them slightly. This helps release the natural oils from the cloves, enhancing the effectiveness of your homemade clove oil.

2. Combine cloves with carrier oil:

Transfer the crushed cloves into a clean, airtight glass container (such as a small glass jar or bottle). Then, pour your chosen carrier oil over the cloves until they are completely submerged. The carrier oil acts as a base and dilutes the strong clove oil.

3. Seal the container:

Close the container tightly with a lid to prevent air from entering. Make sure it's airtight to preserve the potency of the mixture.

4. Infusion:

Place the sealed container in a warm, sunny spot for about 1 to 2 weeks. During this time, the carrier oil will extract the beneficial compounds from the cloves. Shake the container gently every day to facilitate the infusion process.

5. Strain the oil:

After the infusion period is over, strain the oil to remove the crushed cloves. You can use a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to separate the oil from the solid plant material.

6. Store the clove oil:

Transfer the strained clove oil to a dark-colored glass bottle with a tight-fitting lid. Dark glass helps protect the oil from light, which can degrade its potency over time. Store the bottle in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight.

Usage:

To use your homemade clove oil for insect bites, apply a small amount directly to the affected area. Gently massage it into the skin. The clove oil should help reduce pain and inflammation caused by insect bites. However, remember that clove oil is quite potent, so use it sparingly and discontinue use if you experience any irritation or adverse reactions.

Please note that while clove oil can provide temporary relief, severe allergic reactions to insect bites require immediate medical attention. If you experience a severe reaction or suspect you've been bitten by a venomous insect, seek medical help right away.

OIL PULLING

Oil pulling is an ancient folk remedy that involves swishing oil around in the mouth for a certain period, usually 15 to 20 minutes, and then spitting it out.

(I can only do 2 to 5 minutes but it is still worth it)
I mix a few drops essential oil into my oil.  I love peppermint, myrrh, frankincense or clove oil.

The most commonly used oil for oil pulling is coconut oil, but other oils like sesame or sunflower oil are also used.

The practice of oil pulling is believed to have originated in traditional Indian medicine, known as Ayurveda, and has been used for centuries as a form of oral hygiene. It is thought to have various potential benefits, though scientific evidence supporting these claims is limited and inconclusive.

Some of the claimed benefits of oil pulling include:

1. Improved oral hygiene:

Proponents believe that oil pulling helps remove harmful bacteria, plaque, and toxins from the mouth, leading to improved oral health and fresher breath.

2. Gum health:

It is suggested that oil pulling might help reduce inflammation and bleeding in the gums, potentially improving gum health.

3. Teeth whitening

Some people claim that oil pulling can help whiten teeth, although there's limited scientific evidence to support this claim.

4. Detoxification:

Advocates of oil pulling believe that it can aid in detoxifying the body by removing toxins from the oral cavity.

It is not a substitute for regular oral hygiene practices recommended by dental professionals.

Recipe for an avocado, honey, and bentonite clay face mask:

Ingredients:
- 1 ripe avocado
- 1 tablespoon raw honey
- 1 tablespoon bentonite clay
- 1 teaspoon water (optional, for consistency) (I didn't use any)

Instructions:

1. Start by scooping out the flesh of the ripe avocado and placing it in a mixing bowl. Use a fork to mash it until it forms a smooth paste.

2. Add the raw honey to the mashed avocado and mix well. The honey provides moisturizing and antibacterial properties to the mask.

3. Next, add the bentonite clay to the mixture. Bentonite clay is known for its ability to draw out impurities and detoxify the skin. Stir the mixture until all the ingredients are well combined. If the mixture is too thick, you can add a teaspoon of water to thin it out slightly.  (Use plastic utensils when working with bentonite clay)
4. Once the masque is ready, wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat it dry.

5. Apply a thin, even layer of the masque to your face, avoiding the delicate area around your eyes. You can use your fingers or a clean brush for this.

6. Let the mask sit on your face for about 10-15 minutes or until it starts to dry. During this time, the bentonite clay will work to absorb excess oil and impurities from your skin.
7. Once the mask is dry, rinse it off with lukewarm water. Gently massage your face in circular motions while rinsing to exfoliate the skin.

8. Pat your face dry with a clean towel and follow up with your regular moisturizer to lock in hydration.

Note: Bentonite clay can be drying for some skin types, so it's important to moisturize after using this mask. It's also a good idea to do a patch test on a small area of your skin before applying the mask to your entire face to ensure you don't have any adverse reactions.

Enjoy your homemade avocado, honey, and bentonite clay face mask!

DIY Aloe Vera and Honey Cream for skin

Making a DIY aloe vera and honey cream for your skin is a great way to harness the natural benefits of these ingredients. Aloe vera is known for its soothing and moisturizing properties, while honey has antibacterial and moisturizing properties. Here's a simple recipe you can try:

Instructions:
1. In a mixing bowl, combine the aloe vera gel and raw honey. Stir well to ensure they are thoroughly mixed.
2. If you're using coconut oil or olive oil, melt it in a double boiler or microwave until it becomes a liquid. Add it to the aloe vera and honey mixture and stir until well combined.
3. If you prefer a scented cream, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil and mix again.
4. Transfer the mixture to a clean, airtight container.

Usage:
1. Before applying the cream, make sure your face is clean and dry.

3. Allow the cream to absorb into your skin for a few minutes.
4. You can use this cream as a daily moisturizer or as a soothing treatment for irritated or dry skin.

Note: This cream should be stored in the refrigerator to prolong its shelf life. Discard the cream if it changes in color, consistency, or develops an unpleasant odor.

Remember, everyone's skin is different, so it's always a good idea to perform a patch test on a small area of skin to ensure you don't have any adverse reactions to the ingredients before applying it to your entire face.

Easy homemade Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) cream

Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup of plain yogurt (contains lactic acid)
- 1 tablespoon of lemon juice (contains citric acid)
- 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar (contains malic acid)
- 1 teaspoon of honey (optional, for added moisturization)

Instructions:
1. In a clean bowl, combine the plain yogurt, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, and honey (if using). Stir well to ensure the ingredients are thoroughly mixed.
2. Transfer the mixture to a clean, airtight container. A small jar with a lid should work fine.
3. Store the container in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours to allow the acids to develop and the mixture to thicken.
4. After the 24-hour period, your homemade AHA cream is ready for use.

Note:

1. It's important to be cautious when using homemade AHA products as they may not have the same efficacy or stability as commercially produced ones. Additionally, AHAs can increase sun sensitivity, so be sure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day when using AHA products.

2. Patch test the cream on a small area of your skin before applying it to your face or body to check for any adverse reactions.

3. Do not use this cream if you have sensitive or irritated skin. AHAs can cause stinging, redness, and irritation, especially for individuals with sensitive skin.

4. It's generally recommended to follow the instructions and guidelines provided by reputable skincare manufacturers when using AHA products to ensure optimal results and minimize potential risks.

NO POO SHAMPOO

Making your own "no poo" (no shampoo) alternative is a popular method for natural hair care. The following recipe provides a basic starting point, but keep in mind that everyone's hair is unique, and it may require some experimentation to find the right formulation for your hair type:

Ingredients:
- Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
- Apple cider vinegar (ACV) ( I use infused white vinegar (rose petals, rosemary, mint)
- Water

Instructions:

1. Baking Soda Solution:
   - Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 1 cup of water in a container or bottle.
   - Stir well until the baking soda dissolves completely.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar Solution:
   - Mix 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 1 cup of water in a separate container or bottle.
   - Stir well to ensure proper dilution.

Usage:

1. Wet your hair thoroughly with warm water.

2. Apply the baking soda solution to your scalp and hair, focusing on the roots. Gently massage it into your scalp using your fingertips. This mixture acts as a cleanser to remove dirt and excess oils.

3. Rinse your hair thoroughly with warm water.

4. After rinsing, apply the apple cider vinegar solution to your hair, focusing on the ends. Avoid getting it in your eyes, as it can cause discomfort. This mixture helps to restore the natural pH balance of your hair and adds shine.

5. Let the apple cider vinegar solution sit on your hair for a few minutes, then rinse it out with water.

Note: It's important to experiment with the amounts of baking soda and apple cider vinegar to find the right balance for your hair. Some people may find that using these ingredients too frequently or in excessive amounts can cause dryness or other issues. You may need to adjust the recipe to suit your individual needs.

Remember, the transition to a "no poo" method may take some time for your hair to adjust. Initially, you might experience a period of oiliness or imbalance as your scalp adapts to the new routine. It's advisable to gradually reduce the frequency of traditional shampooing while incorporating this alternative method.

1. In a small bowl, combine the sugar and honey.
2. Add the coconut oil or olive oil to the mixture and stir well until all the ingredients are thoroughly combined.
3. Gently apply the scrub to your face using circular motions, avoiding the delicate eye area.
4. Massage the scrub into your skin for about 1-2 minutes, allowing the sugar granules to exfoliate and the oils to moisturize.
5. Rinse your face with warm water and pat dry with a clean towel.

Note: If you have sensitive skin, you may want to reduce the amount of sugar or opt for a gentler exfoliant, such as finely ground oats or coffee grounds.

Remember to perform a patch test on a small area of your skin before applying the scrub to your face to ensure that you don't have any adverse reactions to the ingredients. Also, keep in mind that everyone's skin is unique, so if you experience any discomfort or irritation, discontinue use and consult a dermatologist.

Diy gluten free shampoo

Creating your own gluten-free shampoo at home can be a simple and effective way to avoid gluten if you have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. Here's a basic recipe for a gluten-free shampoo:

- 1 tablespoon jojoba oil
- 10-15 drops essential oil of your choice (optional)

Instructions:
1. In a bowl, combine the liquid castile soap and distilled water.
2. Add the jojoba oil to the mixture and stir well.
3. If desired, add 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oil to give your shampoo a pleasant fragrance. Stir again.
4. Pour the mixture into a clean, empty shampoo bottle or container.
5. Shake well before each use to ensure all ingredients are properly mixed.
6. Your gluten-free shampoo is now ready to use.

Notes:
- Liquid castile soap is a gentle and natural soap made from vegetable oils. Look for a brand that clearly states it is gluten-free to ensure it does not contain any gluten-derived ingredients.
- Distilled water is preferred to ensure the purity of the ingredients.
- Jojoba oil is a moisturizing ingredient that can help nourish the hair and scalp.
- Essential oils are optional and can be added for their fragrance or potential hair benefits. Choose oils that are safe for topical use and avoid any that may cause irritation or allergic reactions.

Remember to patch test the shampoo on a small area of your skin before using it on your scalp to check for any adverse reactions. Also, keep in mind that homemade shampoos may not produce the same lather as commercial shampoos due to the absence of synthetic foaming agents.

Gluten-free shampoos from AMAZON

Gluten-free shampoos are hair care products that do not contain any ingredients derived from gluten-containing grains like wheat, barley, or rye. These shampoos are typically designed for individuals who have gluten sensitivity, celiac disease, or prefer to avoid gluten for personal reasons.

Gluten is a protein found in certain grains, and while it is primarily a concern when ingested, some people may also be sensitive to gluten when it comes into contact with their skin or scalp. For those individuals, using gluten-free hair care products, including shampoos, can help eliminate the risk of a reaction.

If you're looking for gluten-free shampoos, you can check the product labels or look for brands that specifically advertise their products as gluten-free. Some popular brands that offer gluten-free shampoos include:

 Desert Essence

It's always a good idea to read the ingredient list to ensure that the shampoo does not contain any hidden sources of gluten. Additionally, if you have severe gluten sensitivity or celiac disease, it's recommended to consult with a dermatologist or healthcare professional for personalized advice on selecting gluten-free hair care products.
