Oil pulling is an ancient folk remedy that involves swishing oil around in the mouth for a certain period, usually 15 to 20 minutes, and then spitting it out.
(I can only do 2 to 5 minutes but it is still worth it)
I mix a few drops essential oil into my oil. I love peppermint, myrrh, frankincense or clove oil.
The most commonly used oil for oil pulling is coconut oil, but other oils like sesame or sunflower oil are also used.
The practice of oil pulling is believed to have originated in traditional Indian medicine, known as Ayurveda, and has been used for centuries as a form of oral hygiene. It is thought to have various potential benefits, though scientific evidence supporting these claims is limited and inconclusive.
Some of the claimed benefits of oil pulling include:
1. Improved oral hygiene:
Proponents believe that oil pulling helps remove harmful bacteria, plaque, and toxins from the mouth, leading to improved oral health and fresher breath.
2. Gum health:
It is suggested that oil pulling might help reduce inflammation and bleeding in the gums, potentially improving gum health.
3. Teeth whitening:
Some people claim that oil pulling can help whiten teeth, although there's limited scientific evidence to support this claim.
4. Detoxification:
Advocates of oil pulling believe that it can aid in detoxifying the body by removing toxins from the oral cavity.
It is not a substitute for regular oral hygiene practices recommended by dental professionals.
